I'm Dissapointed

That The Second Coming Trailer isn't included on the BG DVD set. This would have been a great tribute to John Colicos(Baltar) and epilogue to the series.

I just came back from Galacticon 2003: The 25th Anniversary Battlestar Galactica Convention. Richard Hatch explained why The Second Coming trailer was not included in the DVD set. Because many of the people working on the project did it pro-bono, it could only be shown for presentation purposes. Universal did inquire about including the trailer in the DVD set but when those cheap-ass executives found out that they would have to pay the people that worked on it, they changed their minds.

I thought it had more to do with the fact that Hatch did not have the rights to BG when he made this "film" (it's only 4 minutes, so it's really just a trailer) and that he and Larson were involved in a legal battle over its making. Though I suppose that, given the fact that Larson's nickname in Hollywood is "Glen Larceny" (a tag often used by SF writer Harlan Ellison), maybe they decided to accept that their both thieves (as if there's been anything original come from either of them) and "Let Cylons Be Cylons."

reply

Either way, he's working on the new BSG and has an important role.

I think that's partially true. The Star Trek fans create tons of stuff and it's all on the internet, but that's because Paramount allows them to do so, as long as they do not profit from it. It keeps the francise alive.

Universal doesn't want any competion with their approved projects.

As for the legal battle, Larson did go to court and they ruled that he did have the right to produce a feature movie, but he was waiting to see how the reimaged series went on SciFi. If it flopped, he intended to seriously look into a movie, but since it has become so popular TOS movie will never be.

Sci Fi's Battlestar Galactica if far from perfect, it has more flaws in it than what the original ever had, and it is not all that popular!, so I think a BG movie with the original cast would work out just fine!

To be fair, the new version is popular. It wouldn't have made it for three seasons and counting , if it wasn't. I do agree there are many flaws in the new one but the reinvention works more than it doesn't. Just the same, it would have been very exciting if a new version based on Richard Hatch's ideas had gotten made. I suspect that Richard Hatch's expanded (and glorified) guest cameos have more to do with keeping the fans of the original show quiet. And keeping Richard Hatch quiet as well.

I watched the trailer on YouTube (Battlestar Galactica, Second Coming/1999) and it was quite enthralling. I liked the concept and the effects. It's really sad a series wasn't created from this slick trailer.

I know some viewers consider the original series 'cheesy' but it certainly had a 'lighter' tone than the latest version which I found to be kind of depressing.

I also thought, when it first came out, there wasn't enough of the cylon interaction. And, frankly, I never really did understand the concept of the cylon existence - If humans made them, how did they become more advanced than humans? In the original, the cylons were created by advanced beings.

Richard Hatch wrote some novels that were sequels to the classic series. I don't see why an animated series couldn't be created from them or even a series of computer games. From what I can see there are many fans of the new version who have no problem getting into the "universe' of the classic series. There is room for both versions.

No it will never work out just fine, because Battlestar was never as popular as Star Trek and many of the new fans never seen the original before and have no idea about any of the old cast or plot. So if they make that movie only you old fogies like you will be watching.

reply

AH-hahahahaha!! Old fogies, lololsnort! I am SO going to remind you you wrote this, twenty years from now, son. ;)

Didn't stop you watching the bloody show did it?!

reply

Not popular.....It was nominated for several TV awards ( Emmy's Peabody's etc.) so that kind of makes your comment about being popular as SERIOUSLY incorrect. However, I do agree with your other comment that a BG movie with original cast will do okay on its own.
