Is this a rehab clinic?

I've never been to a clinic, but I have been to some twelve-step meetings. There were some meeting scenes in the movie that would never have happened in a real twelve step meeting (assuming that this is a Twelve-Step program). Crosstalk between attendees is never allowed, especially with accusations about their behavior. There isn't a professional therapist running the meetings, only a hosting addict with a set itinerary.

So, for people who've been in a twelve-step clinic, was this just hollywood makeup, or is the clinic format of meetings different from outside meetings?

AA (aka, "twelve step") meetings are VERY different from rehab clinics. In rehab, fellow alcoholics are encouraged to openly criticize each other while a counselor moderates (and as the criticizer speaks, the criticizee must remain silent and not be defensive.)

AA is all about supporting each other's recovery. Rehab is all about first recognizing the need for recovery.

And I should mention: I've been through both.

I worked at a drug and alcohol rehab center for a little less than 3 years, and that is a pretty accurate portrayal of what goes on in a treatment facility. I believe that some of the people involved with the film met with a few of our staff members to get a bit of insight as to what really goes on...

I've been to a rehab which was very similar to the one in this movie. They did a good scurate job portraying a rehab clinic.

In rehab they do have AA (& NA) meetings where outsiders can come and all residents of the clinic are required to attend. Besides that the whole rehab would have a few meetings a day just for residents, also smaller groups of about 8 or so residents would meet a couple times a day, and 1 on 1 meetings between patient and counselor.

and yes, in group it is an open forum like it was in the movie. (but not at an AA meeting)

I've been to rehab, and this is a fairly accurate portrayal of it. I was actually fairly surprised when I first saw it. When I found out what it was about, I was expecting it to be totally Hollywood-ised.

I read that Sandra spent some time in a rehab center to research her role.
