stupid question but....

Im n aussie, i love football or gridiron as we call it. I understand all the rules n what not but before the hike the QB yells blue 42 or red 65 or whatever, what exactly is he calling?

In America, we each take a great deal of pride in our favorite numbers and colors. He was reciting his personal favorites so as to bless the upcoming play with good luck.

This is a sort of code he calls for changing the play ( or not ) when he comes up to the line and sees how the defense is aligned against the play that was called in the huddle. Hope this helped you. By the way, I miss the early years of ESPN when they carried Australian Rules Football. I loved it.

You guys call it gridiron?! That's frickin awesome! But when the QB's yell something before they get the snap, it's usually a cadence or code for other players. It maybe a route for a specific reciever, or a blocking scheme for the linemen. It just depends on the team. It's different foe every team. Sometimes it's just easier for the QB to call a route when he sees what the defense is doing, or he might want to change it. Hope this helps dude. Gridiron. badass.

For example, on the very last play of the Dallas game, right at the end of the movie, when Shane throws the TD pass to Murphy, he calls out "Green 86, Green 86", and the pass ends up going to Murphy. Murphy is #86. Like Scrubs said, it could've been the route to #86. They're usually not that obvious, but sometimes they could be.

it's also sometimes when they are trying to draw the other team offside: the QB lets his players know the signal which will come before the snap ie. if he says red 84, the players know the next thing he'll say is 'hut'
