Replacement Cheerleaders?

Don't get me wrong. I love this film. I think it's a slick comedy with great actors (Hackman!!!) and funny sequences.

However...

I never really got the fact that they had to replace the cheerleaders too...most NFL franchises don't even really pay their cheerleaders very well (they make most of their money from promotional appearances, etc...) and they certainly don't have anything to do with players' unions or organizations.

So why did one cheerleader have to go out and recruit a whole new squad? Did the cheerleaders go on strike too? Why was it so hard to get decent cheerleaders in a big city? There must have been plenty of colleges in the area with qualified women for the job! That was one element that was just too silly to ignore...

...or maybe I could have.

I thought the same thing, but then saw this: http://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/the_replacements.pdf
there was a scene cut discussing the cheerleaders walking out/not crossing the picket line in a show of solidarity.

I always thought they could have just thrown a sentence in there somewhere to clear things up.
