NFL players' strike-25 years ago
The real 1987 players' strike began on Monday night, September 21, after the MNF game between the New York Jets and New England Patriots. It then lasted four weeks, with games for the weekend of September 27-28 being cancelled, and games for the weekends of October 4-5, October 11-12, and October 18-19 played with replacement players (and regulars who crossed the picket lines). I remember this strike very well, I was 19 and early in my second year of college, and I was a pretty big fan of the NFL.
The players' union wanted unrestricted free agency, and the team owners did not want to give it to them. I was siding more with the owners, and the replacement players, though I was glad when the regular players returned.
