You know what I never understood?

SPOILER ALERT - Dont read this if you havent seen the movie, you wont be able to answer the question anyway.

I've seen this movie twenty-some times probably; and I never understood what the significance of Gruff breaking his arm has anything to do with saving his pub. Can someone tell me, please?

They're all dead. They just don't know it yet.

Read the FAQ.

The arm breaking wasn't intentional, Shane pulled the ball away and he fell on his arm.

Gruff was supposed to miss the kick. Shane pulling it away allowed him to ave face.

He was supposed to miss the kick but I don't think he was going to. He was crying that he was about to lose his pub, seemed he was going to make the kick to avoid letting his team down. Shane took it out of Gruffs fate to avoid putting him in that position. This is why after the play Gruff says 'thanks shane you saveed my arse'

The broken arm doesn't save Gruff's pub... it saves his life or his honor.

The Mob had bet on the game and told Gruff to make sure that the game went the way they bet. When Gruff breaks his arm, due to Falco pulling the ball away, Gruff no longer can influence the game and is freed from having to miss the kick.

If he makes the kick, the Mob kills him because he ruined their bet. If he purposely misses the kick, he has let down his teammates. This IS their playoff game. This is their last chance to make something of their situation. Breaking his arm takes away the stark choice he faces.

By the way, in case you thought the shark just disappeared at the end of Jaws he didn't, he was blown to pieces.

reply

well i have a theory, not only can the loan shark not fully blame nigel for not missing the kick, i'm sure he'd get a nice paycheck for his injury, some kind of bonus that he could use to pay off the loan sharks.

Did gamblers have a lot of action on replacement games? I doubt they did.

reply

It's a game, so yes. There would be a lot of action on it.

What I wonder though is that the Sentinels are a team of scabs while Dallas had basically their entire team cross the line. In that sense, you've got the pros vs a bunch of semi-pros. You'd think that all the action would be against the Sentinels, and they want him to hit his kick. The spread probably would've already been beaten, I would think.

reply

Now that was what I always wondered, surely the spread would have been huge. Anyone betting on Washington would have already covered. The fg would not have been enough to pull it out for Dallas. The kick was meaningless from a gamblers perspective.
