The centers touchdown

I don't think that would of counted. Even though it was a deflected pass, as the active center, he would be an ineligable reciever, therefore not allowed to touch the ball before another offensive reciever

At least I think. Anyone confirm/deny i'm right? I'm just curious and would like the answer please

Also, when Shane tackled the linebacker on the onsides kick play, wouldn't he not be counted down, even though he was tackled, because he wasn't touched down by an opposing player. And the clock would stop the moment he was tackled down, not have it keep running

reply

because the ball hit a defensive player first, anyone becomes an eligible receiver. If the ball had hit an offensive player first, the play would be whistled dead.

"Good grief, its a running gag..."

Ah, thank you kind sir. Learn something new everyday

Also *beep* is not a center, he's a tackle. The center was not a central character.

Um yes, yes he was the center. The big fat sumo wrestler played center. Thanks

reply

No he's not, he plays tackle, watch the film again.

Though while we're on the character, I think he should have played guard; he's too slow to play tackle.

I will have to do that next time its on. I could be wrong

I agree with you there. He didn't seem to agile enough to be a good tackle. He was a sumo, which is sheer brute force, more suited for guard

reply

He actually SHOULD have played center (given the 2 black guys at guard although they may not have been bad at tackle) but trust me, he isn't the centre.

I saw a defender touch him after Falco touched him.

The whistle blew immediately after Falco tackled him which is a goof because he would not technically be down. Also, the announcers said they would have to immediately call a timeout which is incorrect because the clock would immediately stop after the play was over. A weird goof considering John Madden and Pat Summerall were announcers and you would think they would catch something like that.

You know, I wondered about that with the timeout, too. But I just figured it was a rule change, the movie did come out 9 years ago. I'm not surprised they didn't catch the goof though, they were just following the lines.

I just watched this again. The center wears #55. Jumbo wore #68.

This thread came to mind during the last game in the movie. Watch the last play and you'll see Falco line up under #55.

Okay, now there are many flaws in thisfilm as far as the rules for pro football are concerned. But let's start with the one at hand.

Even if the ball touchs a defensive player, only the player who fumbled the ball can actually advance it. Even if another offensive playerrecovers the ball, the ball is dead on that spot, and can not be advanced. This is known as the "Casper Rule", named for former Oakland Raiders Tight End Dave Casper who purposely kicked a running back's fumble into the end zone, and away from Houston Oiler defensive players, where Casper recovered the ball for a touchdown.

This rule has been on the NFL books since 1978, and many other leagues, including the CFL, have adopted this rule.

reply

But it wasn't a fumble because the ball never touched the ground. The ball hits a defender and lands in the centers hands. There couldn't have been a defensive fumble on that play since the defense never had possession (if the fat guy didnt catch it, it would have been ruled incomplete)

McFly is correct. Once a pass hits a defensive player it all offensive players become eligible receivers. It happened to Tampa Bay this year playing the Eagles I believe it was. Bucs RG caught the ball and got them a 1st.

The 'Casper Rule' only applies to the forward motion on fumbles. You cannot swat nor kick a fumbled ball in a forward motion.

reply

The Casper rule doesn't apply outside the red zone unless they have changed it from its original inception.

reply

The Casper rule is only in effect after the two-minute warning in a half or on fourth down at any time during the game.

A center can be an eligible receiver if he lines up and snaps the ball all the way to the left or all the way to the right. It really doesn't make sense to put your center and quarterback all the way to the side. He is called the "center" for a reason. But I have seen centers as eligible receivers a couple times. It is a trick play. It was actually used in the football game in the movie "M*A*S*H*".
