This SHOULD help those that

a) don't realize that the MOVIE is in part "inspired" by The Odyssey

B) never read it

great power point explaining the correlations

The other side of that problem is that the movie is frequently said to be "based" on the Odyssey and Homer is listed as an author. That is extremely misleading because it takes elements from one quarter of the Odyssey, and has almost nothing to do with the Odyssey as a whole.
B) never read it
People who have never read the Odyssey have a considerable advantage in approaching this movie as they will not notice that it is nothing like the Odyssey. At least some of us who are familiar with the Odyssey didn't know how to take the movie because it is not a retelling of the Odyssey in any meaningful sense. It is a great movie, as long as you do not expect a retelling of the Odyssey.

I think people that HAVE read the Odyssey and are INTELLIGENT enough to understand the difference between a classic writting and a period piece comedy by the Cohens get a considerable "kick" out of the delvings into the book as back drops for the adventure the guys go on . It was a genious piece of script writing I think.

Certainly, when you understand that the movie is not going to turn into the Odyssey and is just a comic riff on the best known, but least important part, of the Odyssey. Anyone who has been led to expect a retelling of the Odyssey, may well be confused about how to take the movie. My favorite way to explain to people how to take the movie is not that it is so much based on the Odyssey as that that Ulysses is an epigon of Odysseus.

I am sure that is true for some people, but for me, that point was just slight amusement.

I agree. It just has almost nothing to do with the Odyssey.I gather that you have not read the Odyssey, and so it is hard to make the point to you.P. S. The incidents that the Coen brothers took from the Odyssey and gave us versions of in the film are from Odysseus's recounting of his travels. You could completely remove that section, about a quarter of the work, without affecting the rest of the Odyssey. Granted, it is the most fun part, but it is not essential to the story.
