Certainly,
when you understand that the movie is not going to turn into the
Odyssey and is just a comic riff on the best known, but least important part, of the
Odyssey. Anyone who has been led to expect a retelling of the
Odyssey, may well be confused about how to take the
movie. My favorite way to explain to people how to take the movie is not that it is so much based on the
Odyssey as that that Ulysses is an epigon of Odysseus.
get a considerable "kick" out of the delvings into the book as back drops for the adventure the guys go on .
I am sure that is true for some people, but for me, that point was just slight amusement.
It was a genious piece of script writing I think.
I agree. It just has almost nothing to do with the
Odyssey.I gather that you have not read the
Odyssey, and so it is hard to make the point to you.P. S. The incidents that the Coen brothers took from the Odyssey and gave us versions of in the film are from Odysseus's recounting of his travels. You could completely remove that section, about a quarter of the work, without affecting the rest of the Odyssey. Granted, it is the most fun part, but it is not essential to the story.
