Does anyone know why it was filmed with sepia tones?
shareIt is explained in the DVD narrations by the Cohen Brothers.

If I agreed with you, we would both be wrong!
To be reminiscent of the Great Depression era...many historical photographs of that time were sepia toned.
shareTo be reminiscent of the Great Depression era ...I think Paper Moon did something similar where they used B & W film shot with red filters and I think it looks terrific too, as does this film.🐭 share
The film was one of the first to be completely digitally processed in post production. It kind of started a trend.
Its that man again!!
Likely the first feature film to be shot "straight" with no use of filters or concern for color temperature. The entire film was then stripped of all color, rendered in black & white and the re-rendered with the final color scheme you see.
Not only does it look amazing, it likely saved a ton of $ in production.
I love the sepia and blue tones. It puts me in the era.
Everything from the dialogue, to the color scheme and the music makes this movie a masterpiece, imo. I don't even know how many times I've watched it - lost count.
