Daughters...

Is anyone else struck by how dissimilar all the daughters look? I realize that the moviemakers simply may not have tried to find actresses who resembled each other, but it makes me wonder if there is supposed to be an in-joke around this - perhaps implying that Penny was not a particularly faithful wife?

No innuendo intended. Just a normal "movie" family. Watch most movies with big families and you'll find that most of the kids don't look a lot alike. Take the Cheaper by the dozen films for example.

To find "daughters" that resembled each other would have eaten too much out of the movie's budget considering these weren't main characters.

Yeah, considering one of the daughters was obviously part black. I was wondering why on earth they would put a high yellow child in the movie with white parents, but now I see that maybe it was done because their father would be too dumb to notice she didn't exactly look like she belonged to him.

Huh? What? All the daughters in the film look white to me, with blonde or light-brown hair.

As for family resemblances, one cannot make any more of it than that the actual love-children of Holly Hunter and George Clooney (if any) were unavailable for filming. Beyond that, I saw no particular lack of resemblance.

My understanding was that the children were chosen for a waif-like and underfed appearance. My understanding is that the sisters who did the harmony-singing did not actually appear because they failed to fit this criterion.

I've got three brothers, and the four of us together just look like four random guys standing in line somewhere; of course, my mother COULD have really gotten around, but......

Momma baby daddy's maybe....... Lol

I think there was at least some concern as well regarding the youngest sister’s ability to memorize a great deal of dialogue should that be required – she was right around 5 years old when the film was made. As this youtube clip illustrates though, they were really just too cute for words! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EC7COEi_kdY

I thought I was the only one who noticed that the daughter with curly blond hair looked half black. She looks just like my former pastor's granddaughter who is half black and has the same hair color, texture, and features as this girl.

Sorry, but curly hair on a child (blond hair, no less) is not proof that she is "half black". As for your former pastor's granddaughter, I'm sure, from your description that most people would say she looks white. As for features, we all have different ones, and it is inevitable that some siblings will look more "black" than other siblings.

Yes, she MIGHT have some black heritage, and this MIGHT have affected her appearance in some way, but you simply cannot tell at this level of dilution.

You've obviously never seen curly hair in Northern England or Scotland than. That's the texture the curls are, and the hair is often coarse. My very white, Irish father also has that hair texture/curl.

Chase: Wow. Yeah, I get it. House is adorable. I just want to hold him and never let go.

I'm kind of reeling that in the 21st century people will comfortably throw around the phrase "high yellow" to discuss the genetic history of a child, regardless of the context. Perhaps Paula Dean is a movie fan?

I guess the fact that all of the girls also have blond hair would not make them not Holly Hunter & George Clooney's daughters even in the movie. That would be very unusual from two parents with dark hair.

Just sitting there among the zinnias, but the old Chinese man sold it to me anyways. For $1.95.
