Why are there so many French forts in US according to Wikipedia?!

I'm not certain but they were probably built in the era where England/France/Dutch? fought over territory in North America. There were some French forts and strongholds in India too (like Pondicherry) but the British "won" in the end.

Anyone know?

Because France was trying to establish dominion over North America. However, France never had the large settlements that the British had for instance, relying on fur trading rather than establishing agricultural settlements. These forts were essentially outposts into the wilderness that provided a central point for this commerce, providing protection for the goods and the people handling them. Because France had relatively few numbers in NA, they largely tried to work with the Native population to conduct their business, as opposed to taking them by force. Despite this seeming "get along" approach, there were still plenty of hostilities, there were no police or courts and there was a real need for safe havens. As the true "first world war" started to heat up and France and Great Britain (and to a lesser extent, Spain) squared off to decide who would call North America theirs, these forts became even more important as strategic military staging grounds and last bastions of defense. As French forts fell, they became British forts.

France used to own huge amounts of land (Louisiana Purchase), the U.S. bought this land from France and increased the size of the country at that time. France had establishments here just as England did back in that time period.

Is this a serious question? If so, then someone needs to go back to middle school. Here is a hint. The French controlled about 50% of what eventually became the United States at one point. Trying looking up the Louisiana Purchase.
