How would you define American exceptionalism?

It's a phrase that keeps coming up and I'm not sure I fully understand.

I think "moronic" summons up the idea of American Exceptionalism.

Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

It's the local name for fascist toss-pottery, like ubermensch ideology in Germany and incest between rich bastards in the south-east of England.

I see it as another variation and extension of "Manifest Destiny," the idea that America is the result of "God's Will" and giving us moral license to do whatever we want. "Manifest Destiny" was the justification for expanding across the North American continent, while "American Exceptionalism" is the justification for global interventionism.

The problem is that it places unrealistic expectations and contrived obligations on America and its people to support interventionist causes - even if there is no benefit to America in doing so.

As a result, "patriotism" is no longer a matter of simply loving America, its land and its people. Now, "patriotism" has been redefined by supporting an intricate and tangled web of alliances, abstract ideologies, and interventions.

All to further a globalist agenda which has been more of a liability to America than anything that gives us any benefit.

And anyone who doesn't give blind, unwavering support to that agenda is branded a "pinko" or otherwise considered "disloyal" to America, when nothing could be further from the truth.

All of the above answers are correct to some extent. The version I've heard is that American Exceptionalism refers to the US' motivation for doing things. Every superpower in history did things for material gain and global political influence. People who feel the US is exceptional tend to believe it somehow does things out of concern for democracy and justice.

This is more widespread than you'd think. Even when Bill Maher says, "Why is it always up to us to intervene in the Middle East," it's as if he thinks "we" are doing it out of the kindness of our hearts and someone twisted our arm to have bases and fight wars there.
