All of the above answers are correct to some extent. The version I've heard is that American Exceptionalism refers to the US' motivation for doing things. Every superpower in history did things for material gain and global political influence. People who feel the US is exceptional tend to believe it somehow does things out of concern for democracy and justice.
This is more widespread than you'd think. Even when Bill Maher says, "Why is it always up to us to intervene in the Middle East," it's as if he thinks "we" are doing it out of the kindness of our hearts and someone twisted our arm to have bases and fight wars there.
