Why do people think

Why do people expect this to be an accurate portrayal of the American Revolution? Of course, it IS an accurate account of LIFE during the Revolution, but the specific events are mostly fiction. Also, how did Gibson not get nominated for BA? Just my opinion.

The issue a lot of people have is that it portrays real characters either directly, or in the case of Tavington, indirectly. This is not bad in itself but personally I think if you're going to use real names there exists an obligation to give them an honest representation. That Lord Cornwallis approved Col Tavington (believed to be based on Banastre Tarleton) to commit war crimes is completely unfounded.
