Same. Watching it now. What a performance by Gibson!
shareIt's interesting that they wanted Harrison Ford for the role. But Mel was great and he brought a ferociousness to the Ft. Wilderness side of his character that I don't think Harrison could have done.
shareI just can't seem to imagine Ford in this role! He is an excellent actor in his own rite, but this role seemed custom made for Gibson!

Mel's strongest part of acting, in my opinion, is portraying pain and anguish. The scenes when he lost his sons, and similar scenes of emotional pain in other films, really are fine works of his craft.
Mentions of Harrison Ford in previous replies to this, had he been in the role, those and many other scenes would not have been nearly as powerful. I think it would have brought a completely different tone to the film. Perhaps still a very good film, but certainly not the same emotionally.
We watch it every Fourth of July. Awesome, fun flick.
