This was quite generic

But the director did make Independence Day 2 so that explains...

reply

Quite? It’s hilariously vapid.

reply

Not really. The first great Revolutionary War movie. Gibson and Ledger nailed it. The reluctanct warrior turned killing machine and the idealistic patriot.

reply

That description fits perfectly Braveheart, which preceded this film and was superior in every way. Having Gibson do another film with an identical script but set in another time/place was a truly dumb idea - if this film had another actor, perhaps this film would work as it wouldn't be directly compared to Braveheart.

reply

yes i prefer braveharts to this film. much better.

reply

Not a patriot at all. Martin said he would not fight as he had already fought his battles. He changes his mind only when his son is killed by the British and quits as soon as he gets his revenge. He was an avenger, not a patriot.

reply

i think this film okay, but it is too melodrama. too in your face. like saving privates ryan - too much corn and cheese to characters and dialoge.

the limey army did not burn whole town in church. this is stupid.

i like how they go to beach and meet up with black peoples. it is like film makers say "See! these white peoples in 18th century are not racist!!" hahahaha.

and scene of racist white soldier later telling black man "i am honored to fight alongside you!" hahahahahahaha. so cheese. i have cheese overdose on this film, and dies of cringe!!

YOUR GIMMICK IS TERRIBLE...BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD,BUBBA. NOEMOJI

reply

agreed. cheesy historical reimagination

reply

yes yes!

film have good concept but cheese, to much cheese!

this film deserve a better script. american independant war is fascinating. this film entertains but should be so much better than end picture.

reply

Haha this pretty much nails my issues with the film.

“ and scene of racist white soldier later telling black man "i am honored to fight alongside you!" ”

This line along with the “stupid boy” line were just so lame.

Those 2 lines along with the church burning down kept this from being a great movie.

Sad, it was so close.

reply

yes agree. roland emericch films always go too far with certain thing.

roland's early german film moon 44 & his first hollywood movie (uniSol) - both good. but he make his film too cheesy after this, too hollywood. stargate, ID4, godzilla - all shit. patriot was big improvement over those three shit films but still contain too much shit left over from those bad movies like those cheese scenes we discuss.

also main limey bad guy in this film is too much caricature, like cartoon bad guys. and most cheese scene ever in film when mel gibsons friend tell him "i will name my son gabriel" in honor of gibbo's son who killed by chief limey. total cheese. put it on my pizzas. i cringe at this.

reply

Oh man that’s funny. Stargate was so cheesy. ID4 also. Did he do Broken Arrow also? Faceoff?

Yes Jason Isaacs makes a great villain. He’s the evil leader, has the guys son killed in front of him for a really weak reason. All he to do is ride off, like a normal evil person would do. Nope, we gotta add dialog, with him looking right at the camera, because we think the audience is too dumb to understand, he’s the bad guy.

The racist guy, risking his life for the black guy, would have been powerful. No let’s have him look right at the camera and say “I’m honored to fight with you, honored”. Surprised he didn’t call him “my brother.”

Braveheart set the standard for what an epic great film should be. Minimal dialog. Let the actions of the characters tell the story.

The Patriot had potential, just needs a re-edit.

His kids were a little too pretty also. And the hot sister who falls right into place was a bit convenient. Would have been better without all that. More battles. More historical politics. Strategy etc…

The French bloke was a nice addition.

no john woo direct broken arrow and face off. john woo come from the 'school of what script?'. his film is like commercial with pigeons. he is like korean michael bay. then if john woo took a shit it would be McG. all these haxxors know how camera work but do not know peoples. in the 80s these guys would be scrubbing shit from speilbergs trailer toilet.

yes exactly they force it so much that jason isaac is bad man. he is cartoon bad guy. all you need is mustache and he can twirl it in between laughing like maniac. there is even scenes where he force black man to fight in his army. its like if audience do not know he is evil man, he is now racist evil man! all woketards would combust at seeing this.

yes i agree, if patriot have less cheese then it would follow your ideas of having racist man risking life for black man and that show he is good man. action speak louder than word as they say.

yes patriot is like keelai version of braveheart. braveheart is masterpiece of understated bad assery and makes me want to live in scottish mountains and fight english bastard.

yes yes more battles and bad assery and less family in patriot. i think gibson demanded family scenes because he himself have 10 kids just like character in movie, but it just add cheese.

yes the frog was legend. i love this man. dressing like napolean.

It's really not very good but I still love it. It's the directing specifically that kind of sucks. There's a lot of bad takes in this and it's not terribly well put together. It doesn't emotionally connect the way it should either. It feels very slapped together and the mass combat scenes in particular are not choreographed very well. Soundtrack is also kind of stock and isn't lifting our hearts in key scenes the way it should. Moves along far too quickly when it shouldn't either, like the church massacre and retaliation and what not. These moments are never given weight. Just bam bam bam barrelling through to the end. And that's how this guy makes all his movies. That's great for disaster and monster movies. Not so much for an emotional drama. But it has a really incredible cast who do a pretty terrific job in spite of things.
