The Dumbest Villain Ever?

What kind of villain would say to a person, "OK, i want you to deliver me fifty cars in three days. For leverage, im not gonna keep your brother...im just gonna promise to kill him if you dont do it."

Then the hero Asks:

"Well...are you gonna put one of your dangerous thugs on him as a bodyguard?"

Villain:

"Nah...better make it a buddy of yours who is obviously your friend"

Hero:

"Oh, ok...well...do you want me to shoot him in the leg to make it more fair for you?"

Obviously i exxagerated the last part, but that is the jist of this movie.

Has always bothered me.....

I think it's just that Calitri considers himself to be such a big-time hard-ass that he believes the mere threat of what will happen if Memphis fails will be enough to ensure that he will do what Calitri wants.

reply

I love the exchange between him and Memphis, which culminates in:

Calitri: "Do I look like an a**hole.
Memphis: "Yeah."

Cracks me up every time.

reply

Then, there's this:

"It never rains, but it pours!"

Some really lame attempt at an insult playing off Memphi's last name. Dork.

LOL!!!

Dork.

Classic.

"Why do most signatures contain out of context quotes that no one gets?"

reply

They call him "The Carpenter..."

That did it for me right there.

reply

Lol. I just love the fact that he's called "The Carpenter" but it's not because he cuts his enemies into pieces with a saw or anything remotely interesting or scary. He...um....just enjoys making furniture. And that's it!

That is SO lame!

"What this country needs right now... is a Doctor."

reply

I don't think its lame as he makes coffins for his victims but we never find out if he puts them in the coffin alive or dead!

Also we don't know what else he makes from wood - he could be really sadistic & build crucifixes or other torture devices!

reply

Not the dumbest villain ever :P

RC was touched in the head and this is demostrated a few times throughout his appearances.

The role was played well...

reply

The role was well played, yes. But it was a stupid role. The actor did well with what he was given, which was total crap.

Wood? Really? thats even dumber than holding a weasel so you can stroke it while you plot against the good guys.

It added absolutely nothing to the movie. What it added to the character made him laughable rather than feared. Silly silly choice.

reply

I like that the so called villain as he is. A real guy. The furniture thing is fun and unique. So the question for all you dislikers of this Carpenter villain is, do you really dislike this unique villain or do you just like all your villains to be cookie cutter everyone the same villains. Maybe A Stallone movie is on cable.

reply

Clearly not the dumbest villain. Blofeld in Diamond's are Forever has to be.

However to clear up why he didn't assign one of his more trusted thugs to watch Memphis, it is assumed he knows where his mother works and lives. Too much to risk and too little time to get her out of town. Also the lure of 200K dollars is qute a carrot if you pull it off. It is clear he didn't trust Atley totally because in the end when those two thugs were going to shoot Memphis in the scrapyard, Atley comes running with a phone claiming their is a change in plans and they tell him to can it.

reply

Horrible villain, he didn't seem intimidating nor threatening...maybe it was his fetish for wood and his accent. I agree that "it never Raines but it pours" was laughable.

Another thing stupid about his character is the fact hes scottish. I mean how many born and bred scottish gangsters are there in America?
Over all this character is one of the films major flaws.

reply

Scottish....?

I fully disagree with this whole thread- the character was believable, made out of "vicious" and scary as hell like a live wire you don't wanna touch. I credit this to Eccleston, who flawlessly pulled it off.

reply

You obviously missed the line where he states that they have been chased out of England & France but has settled in the USA

reply

He certainly wasn't Scottish. Christopher Eccleston is from Salford (Greater Manchester)in England. He was speaking with his regular accent in this film.

reply

I think Christopher Eccleston did a great job performing the role he was given.

What made no sense to me at all about the character, though, was that we're supposed to believe he's such a big-time, big-nuts hardcase, and yet he's got a contract to deliver 50 stolen luxury cars — fifty! — it's got to just three days from the delivery deadline and he hasn't yet acquired a single car.

What was he waiting for? Or is he completely incompetent? Why are we supposed to see him as this big crime boss?

I know it's the necessary set-up for what happens in the movie, and it's supposed to seem like an impossible task, but it's just ridiculous.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

reply

The 3 days was the time remaining on the original job that Kip screwed up on.

Calitri had the deal in place with a buyer and the delivery date was already set.

reply

Yes I understand that, but it still makes no sense, if he's such a big underworld figure as the movie tries to make him out to be, that he would allow himself to be in this situation and not have other teams sourcing cars. This movie just drips dumb from every pore.

The whole wood fetish was obviously symbolic (albeit not very intimidating) in case people are still wondering.

Clearly Memphis has a love for cars and metal. Memphis is also American whose favourite car is the American Ford Mustang.

Then we have the big bad foreigner Brit who owns a scrap yard that crushes cars (what Memphis loves most). He also hates metal (which cars are made of) because it's cold and instead he loves wood which contrasts with Memphis.

Calitri has an emotional attachment to wood like Memphis has to cars/metal.

Having said that, the whole "Carpenter" character does crack me up.

Well what are the use of my brains if I'm tied up with a dumb cluck like you?

reply

Very bad character and role. This film features some of the worst writing imaginable.
