anytime I see this movie on tv that chase scene with the Shelby always bothers me...the cops have a helicopter in the pursuit and the thing is barely off the ground!?! Why?? The whole point of a police helicopter in a pursuit is to fly ABOVE everything to track the car
I know this is an action movie and its a good action movie but that part always bothered me, just needed to vent a little
yea but the helicoptor couldn't fly over (i am assuming it was) LAX's airspace and that is how he loses the copter. just because it can fly doesn't mean it can go anywhere it wants.
sharethe airport thing happened later....I was referring to the part when Nic Cage hits the nitrous booster and speeds past the cops chasing him....the chopper pilot gives up when he does that saying "He's gone!", not being able to fly in the airspace was a different sequence....
You're right that the helicopter could have followed him from a thousand feet up, but it set up my favorite quote in the whole movie "This is a Naystar, not an Apache."

You ever play NFS Most Wanted? In that, when you got to the higher wanted levels, the choppers actually come down and ram you (as if kamikaze Fed Corvettes weren't enough!)
I've played, and beaten NFS Most Wanted. I've had several chases that were 30 minutes or longer, all at level 5 wanted level, and never ONCE did I have the helicopters try to ram me. Quit making stuff up to look cool. You just end up making yourself look like a fool.

So it can stay in frame. The director (on the dvd extras) pretty much admits that its stupid to be that low with the helicopter, but it's a really boring shot with the chopper 500 ft in the air.

The logical thing to do when he hits the nitrous booster would be for the pilot to pull up so that he can see further down the line. That nitrous gas will run out soon enough or Memphis will have to slow down because he's not on a straightaway anymore. All the chopper pilot has to maintain visual and he can radio the guys on the ground about where the bright metallic silver car is located when it slows back down.

In reality you can outrun a police helicopter. If your vehicle can go 120+ MPH they are going to have trouble keeping up.
Yeah that'd work if:
1) i think more like 150mph
2) you have a straight, direct, as-the-crow-flies road to your magical unicorn exit strategy , to prevent the chopper taking shortcuts
3) The police have no radios /cameras / other units further up the road
4) No cctv on the motorway ( which we in the UK do)
5) no traffic
etc etc
