No it was not. The original website the story was that after the police gave up looking for the students, Heather's mother submitted it to haxton films and gave permission to put it together and make it into a movie to spread the word about her missing daughter and friends. Which was the story for the reason why it was an actual movie in theaters.

Yes, but not edited before it was found, which is what the OP was getting at.
