I think you are ignoring the fact that what happens is supposed to be a result of a supernatural force. The fact that they simply could not have gotten that mixed up is the point. It is supposed to be a violation of normality.

They were stoned and stupid city kids. Once they found the creek all they had to do was follow it. Flowing water always leads to people.
