"Oh its cold"

I get why they do it for 'cinematic' purposes, but plot-wise...
Why the heck do characters insist on going on these deep-woods treks in late autumn??
They always do that, yet act surprised or dismayed that its so cold out!

Why not go on your trip in July?!!

Just sayin'.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

But that would have ruined the mood of the movie. Something about the autumn just fits this movie.

I gotta go feed that thing in Room 33.

This bothers you? Really...??

Wasn't this a class project of Heather's? The semester probably started beginning of September, and who knows how many weeks it took her to plan everything...hence her filming it in late October.

Plus the decision to film close to Halloween seemed at least partially deliberate or at least convenient to Heather's vision for the documentary. At one point she says something like "the woods around Halloween time are a creepy enough phenomenon as it is..." I don't remember exactly when she said this though.

I also didn't get the impression she was necessarily "surprised" that it was so cold. Members of the Polar Bear Club most likely know exactly what they're getting into, but I'm sure some members still yell profanities when they emerge from the icy water in the dead of winter! Plus it was nighttime, when it's even colder, and she had to leave the relative warmth of her tent.

As an Okie, I'd personally prefer the cold snap of an October night to the sweat-drizzled, mosquito-encrusted heat of a July day.

They also weren't expecting to get lost and be in the woods as long as they were...

I think the idea is, they went prepared but it was colder than they expected somehow. Maybe it's supposed to be creepy, make it all seem more wrong.
