If you watch the charge across the field(purple smoke) you will see men clearly screaming yelling as they run across the field, yet you cannot hear them, it is almost silent.
Why?

It reminds me of the muddy bootcamp scene in full metal jacket. You can clearly see several actors smiling and laughing in what is supposed to be a miserable experience.

Irks me something fierce.

Why?

It is an artistic choice made by the director. I think it is supposed to represent how focused the soldiers are in the frenzy of battle. They are thinking about their job and don't really hear their surroundings. You can hear them running and jingling of their gear. I'm not sure why they'd be yelling though. Catching the Germans by surprise was a big reason they routed them.

And it wasn't purple smoke. It was red.
