The Unsung Heroes

In such a grand war like this one, there are always countless of unsung heroes. In this Band of Brothers series, the ones that most memorable to me were the two nurses in the Bastogne episode. Anna the Nurse (the black nurse from Congo, played by Rebecca Okot) and Renee Lemaire (the local white nurse played by Lucie Jeanne). Their dedication and selflessness with their care and compassion can only be told through their constant lifesaving actions while physically and emotionally drained... and, the haunting tiredness of war and wounded men in their eyes...

Yes, I think too often we see the heroes of war simply as the men in combat, but many people played roles in helping the war effort. Renee Lemaire was killed in Bastogne by a German air raid at age 30 on Christmas Eve, 1944. As I mentioned on another thread, the Congolese nurse, Anna, was based on Augusta Chiwy (who was in fact half Belgian and half Congolese; she was born in Congo but moved to Belgium at age 9). She survived the air raid that killed Renee, married and had 2 children. She died last year, aged 94.

The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those that speak it.
