Great Miniseries, but how war changed....

This is a fantastic miniseries, and probably the best war based production I have ever seen.

With that said, it also makes you realize how much war has changed. I mean, with the exception of Desert Storm, we haven't won a war since WWII, but we haven't lost one, either. It just shows how much war has changed. Back then there were clear objectives of what had to be done, with no exceptions. From Korea on, it became a bit muddled. And these last two wars are most indicative of that new doctrine.

These guys truly are/were part of the greatest generation.

It's cuz they're not 'regular' wars...usually we leave it to the proxies or these kinds of wars just go on & on-See Colombia's ongoing fight with the FARC-it's been going on for several decades.

All wars since WW2 can be classified as regional conflicts.

It could be argued that the unimaginable loss of life and destruction that resulted from WW2 taught world leaders not to escalate regional conflicts, i.e. the Soviets not to intervene in Vietnam, the US not to intervene in Afghanistan in 1980.

We (the US) lost Vietnam. WWII was the last justified war. The rest were about containing an ideology.

We have North America and Central America in our immediate region. That should be our priority. We do not need the whole world. The sleeping giant that was awoken at Pearl Harbor needs to go back to sleep. If other countries want communism as their form of government, then let them have it. Who are we to say how another culture should govern themselves? Why do we always assume we know what's best for the world? In Vietnam, the "bad guys" won and guess what, you and I can now freely travel there in peace. We need a radical priority shift in American foreign policy. And by the way, George
W. Bush and all those responsible for invading Iraq should have to spend some time in jail.

Most of the problems we have in foreign relations today are a result of our utter inability as a nation to mind our own goddamn business. I agree with the previous poster; we haven't fought a war that had anything to do with American freedom since WWII. And don't even get me started on Iraq. We were the aggressors. We were not the good guys, not even for a second. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis died in the Iraq war, most of them innocent civilians. How do you justify that? You can't. And where are the WMDs? There weren't any. It was a lie. I don't care what Clinton said; he's as corrupt as any other politician and we already know he's a liar. (Or did you believe him when he said "I did not have sexual relations with that woman"?) The removal of Saddam Hussein also created the power vacuum that opened the doors for ISIS to get a foothold, while the death toll was the best recruitment tool ISIS could ask for. That war was fought to settle daddy's old score and to make lots and lots of money for Dick Cheney (for my money, one of the most evil people this country has ever produced, far worse than that puppet chump W. Scary thing is, W looks like a rational and intelligent man in comparison to Donald Trump.) Our own troops also suffered greatly as a result of those bs wars. One friend of mine came home with PTSD and a serious substance abuse problem, culminating in several DUI's and jail time; another took his own life, leaving behind a wife and baby daughter. And what good came of it? Zilch. We are more hated now than we have ever been, and it's our own fault. In WWII, we were the good guys. In Iraq, we were not.

I agree with the previous poster; we haven't fought a war that had anything to do with American freedom since WWII.

It is your right to be wrong. Unfortunately, people like you cause the rest of us to not be safe. You forget history - such as Khrushchev pounding on a podium saying, "We will bury you!" or them planting nukes 90 miles off of our coast, or all of the other things they did. They took over lands to get better chances to attack while enslaving their own people.

And they were better off under Saddaam? He wiped out his own people with WMD's. After we took him out, Iraqi women were able to vote and there was relative stability in the area.

We never went to war with the Soviets, and we are not all speaking Russian. People can SAY anything they want. Like Donald Trump, who says he's going to build a wall and "make" Mexico pay for it (lol), kill the families of terrorists (um, that's not legal), require retail workers to say "Merry Christmas" instead of "Happy Holidays" (that's not legal either), open up libel laws to take away freedom of the press (nope, can't do that either), repeal the 14th amendment (also can't be done), violate the Geneva Convention by invading Middle Eastern and African allies to forcibly seize oil fields (nope, can't do it), violate the First Amendment by revoking separation of church and state (nope)... the list goes on. Just because the dumbass says all these things doesn't mean he'd ever actually be able to do any of them. That's why he's a joke. So it really doesn't matter what Khrushchev said. The Cold War ended without combat, as much as that may disappoint you.

Cheney's company made almost 4 billion dollars from the Iraq war. That's not a talking point, it's a fact. You really think that's just a coincidence? Saddam Hussein was not a threat to us. Iraq is a sovereign nation. The idea that we invaded and killed hundreds of thousands of people there in order to "save" them is the absolute height of brainwashed, "god bless the USA" idiocy. And, of course, the blaming of everything wrong in the world and the country on Obama. Wow, that's convenient, isn't it? And also original, never heard that before. Let me guess, you also think he was born in Kenya and is a secret Muslim terrorist? (A Muslim who nonetheless smokes cigarettes, drinks beer and eats pork, all things forbidden in Islam.) It's also hilarious that you insist on using a zero in his name instead of an O for some reason apparently known only to the far right, and that you use the oh-so-mature and sophisticated term "dumbocrats". (I'm not a democrat, by the way, nor am I a Clinton supporter. I actually loathe the woman.)

I'm the son of a WWII vet, and I was absolutely outraged by the way Trump dismissed John McCain with the statement "He's not a war hero." I may not agree with McCain's politics, but I have nothing but respect for his military service.

And the last person in the world who should be passing judgement on ANYONE'S military service is the Dumpster.

I could tell he was a Trump supporter as soon as I read that last reply. My father was a WWII vet also, as well as a lifelong Republican, and I can say without a doubt that he would be horrified by Donald Trump (in fact, every Republican I know with an IQ above 75 is horrified by Trump. Even George W. Bush is horrified by Trump!). I'm actually glad my dad is not alive to see this farce of an election year, and especially the fact that the Republican nominee is an openly fascist Mussolini wannabe (although even Mussolini at least had military experience; poor Donnie couldn't go to Vietnam because his little footie hurt). My dad was also the son of Italian immigrants, and fought in the Italian Campaign with the 34th Infantry. He saw firsthand what fascism did to Italy, and now there are so-called "patriots" who want to put a fascist in the White House. It boggles my mind.

List all of the things wrong with politics and politicians today, and Hillary will match up to at least 95% of them. And we don't even need to go into how she calls herself a feminist, and then not only excuses Bill's sexually assaulting women, but taking millions from countries which blame women for getting raped.

And you're fine with this? You actually condone his condescending, dismissive attitude toward American POWs?

The FACT? Are you serious? This isn't a fact; it's a total falsehood. And not because I say so, but because it was determined to be a falsehood by a 2014 GOP investigative committee. (I do hope you're aware that "GOP" refers to the Republican Party.)

Their findings:

Debunking a series of persistent allegations hinting at dark conspiracies, the two-year investigation of the politically charged incident determined that there was no intelligence failure, no delay in sending a CIA rescue team, no missed opportunity for a military rescue, and no evidence the CIA was covertly shipping arms from Libya to Syria...

In other words, Clinton was cleared by a GOP intelligence committee. But you're still believing the lies, because you PREFER to believe the lies. And statements implying that Clinton got members of the military "killed" are not only inaccurate, they make you look ridiculous when you post them.

But as for Trump's disrespect for John McCain's military service (and by extension, past and present American POWs), that's a matter of public record. It's shameful that he uttered such garbage, and I'm astonished people continued to support him afterward.

Then, and this is something that no matter what lies you tell or truths you twist, she FLAT OUT LIED as to the reason for their deaths.

As far as McCain's service goes - are you referring to the time he was in a POW camp or his service time? Because Trump isn't the only one to not be praising McCain. He crashed at least two planes - one was his fault for sure and the other was ruled "undermined."

Even things McCain said about himself aren't all that great -

My reputation was certainly not enhanced when I knocked down some power lines while flying too low over southern Spain. And it is entirely appropriate for John McCain to critically assess his own performance in the military; in fact, I'm sure he would be the first person to state that he wasn't a war hero. However, it is entirely inappropriate and totally chick$hit for someone who has never served his country to belittle the military service of someone who has. Trump has never made the sacrifices that McCain has, or indeed, anyone who's ever served in the American military. Throughout his life, Trump has only served himself; he's never served a constituency, and he's certainly never served the Constitution. He has no track record whatsoever in public office. And who's the one political leader Trump has repeatedly expressed admiration for? Vladimir Putin, the autocratic dictator of a repressive regime in which freedom of expression is non-existent. Donald Trump is a flat-out disgrace.

And he's been endorsed by the KKK, the American Nazi Party and Kim Jong-un of North Korea - people who share your intellectual acuity.

I've never thought 0bama was born in Kenya. Even if he was, his mother at the time of his birth, was a US citizen so therefore that makes him a natural born citizen. What I am 100% sure of is that throughout his lifetime, any chance he got to list his citizenship, he would list being Kenyan in order to get financial aid and/or consideration. Not that other people don't do the same, but it would look really bad for a Presidential candidate to have done such a thing.

And, I also don't think he's a mooslum. He was just raised by one and ignorantly clings to the belief that they are misunderstood and if we are nice to them, they'll be nice to us. He thinks of them as the underdogs, which is why he's so reluctant to be critical of him. It is the same reason as to why he's quick to blame cops for the few times an innocent black is shot by them, but only reluctantly ever addressed the THOUSANDS of INNOCENT blacks murdered by other blacks every year.

I'm not brainwashed. I'm from Illinois. I've watched the scumocrats for decades ruin everything they've touched. I've watched them vote for tax increases to pay themselves more at a 2pm meeting on a Tuesday so that few would be there to counter it. I've watched them ignore the will of the people and build a project which we voted against - TWICE. Every sh!thole city of any size and every sh!thole state is that way because it has been run by scumocrats for decades.

Trump is not the best choice for POTUS, but he is by far the best choice out of the two who have a chance of being elected.

If there were a viable 3rd party candidate, I'd vote for him. But Gary Johnson is too much of a stoned moron to actually get elected.

WW2 was the last war America ever won. It was also the last real war America even fought in. The rest especially the more recent ones have been conflicts of choice. Hitler declared war on the U.S., so did Japan with their attack on Pearl Harbour. It shows the difference between a real genuine war like ww2 and something you get evolved in because of politics or stupid power games.
