What IS Nixon's purpose in the series ?

I'm not talking about the real Lewis Nixon, since he seemed to have seen more action than the mini-series Nixon. The series Nixon seems to have never made the jump with the other guys on June 6th, and he was never in any combat scenes. What was his role then, just a sounding board for Winters ? The conscience of Easy Co. ? Yet he seems to be credited as the second lead of the story.

Ironically "Nix" made ALL the jumps the 101st made and on top of that he made a jump with the 17th airborne division on Operation Varsity (March 24, 1945) but his plane was hit after he exited so most of his 'stick' died in the crash. It's also an interesting factoid that he never fired his weapon during the war.

I would think it was because he was assigned to intelligence.

this. he was able to clue us in on the bigger picture.

He was part of the battalion and regimental staff, serving as an intelligence officer, so he wasn't on the front lines much, if at all.

If you tell the story of Major Winters, you have to include Lewis Nixon. Part of the drama is the juxtapositioning of their characters: One a devout Christian and teetotaler, the other a heavy drinking non-believer. The fact that such two different individuals became best friends throughout their lives is a pretty compelling dynamic. Besides that, Damian Lewis and Ron Livingston showed excellent chemistry with each other.

In the montage that concludes the first episode ("Currahee"), Nixon is clearly shown in jump gear aboard a C-47 that's about to take off for the D-Day invasion; he's examining a map of the drop zone with Colonel Strayer. The sequence only lasts about 6 seconds, but it's there.

He was in the regimental S2 which is intelligence gathering. I'm not an expert on it, it's just from what I picked up watching the series. His job covered learning enemy strength, getting the objectives down to company commanders, anticipating enemy movements and strategy, etc. I'm sure someone could explain it better than me, but that's what I learned from watching the show.

It's an excellent question. Apart from depicting Nixon in his historical role, he does serve as a figure to move the story along at various points, almost like the chorus in ancient theater.
