Sara kept her job....Possible spoilers

I was wondering how she was having an affair, became pregnant, and I felt she was still Chancellor. In the college professional world, this may be a stretch unless she took good care of the husband, otherwise her career would have been finished. At least in the capacity she was in.

Don't get me wrong, I really liked them with child and them together, but it should have been more of a struggle than what was shown.

If it was a child she was after then she could have had one without all the drama. Just what Chancellor would become pregnant from having an affair, seems to easy to gloss over. Most Chancellors spend a lot of time putting out theses type of fires so who would hire her again. I am basing this on I felt she was still in a high position in education.

I also wondered what age she was supposed to be..wouldn't a Chancellor be at least close to 50?

reply

That is another great point we are looking at someone to be a Chancellor to have a extensive educational background. she looked to be in her forties or at least late thirties. I know how college politics work to some degree she would have been fired without so much as looking back on it with having an affair with her subordinate and then being pregnant behind it. she would have never been able to get that position again so one has to wonder if she wanted a child she surely went about it the wrong way and the board could care less about her mistakes as there are many who would have called her out on it.

Even with small colleges the job is full of politics. As i said she could have taken care of the husband with money to keep it quiet and that would have been the only way it would have worked because Chancellors are always giving dinners and hosting. To show up without your husband or with another faculty member would have given her away.

Did Walter seem like the guy of guy who would make a dramatic scene over his divorce? He let James slide on stealing his most prized possession and shooting his dog. Why in the world would he embarrass himself with a scandal whether it was her fault or not?

As for the insinuations that Sara planned to get pregnant with Grady, those are downright silly. She considered not having the baby but was clearly in love with him and wanted a family with him. He took forever to come around but in all fairness, he did have a crazy complicated weekend distracting him.

As far as her being a Chancellor, it's a small fictional liberal arts college. Maybe it was nepotism, maybe she's insanely smart with great experience at highly regarded institutions. How is this even a point of conflict?

reply

You say............As for the insinuations that Sara planned to get pregnant with Grady, those are downright silly.

To witch I say she is a college Chancellor, so one would think she knew a married woman having sex and using no protection would get her pregnant. At most any college it is very rare that nepotism plays a part in getting this job. Walter would not have to say anything someone would find out. And no other college would go near her in the teaching college world. You are really naive.

The post was a mere reality check on something I found far fetched in the film. It was really not to be a moral judgement on her but i was pointing out something that was highly improbable.

reply

There was nothing naive about my response, half of "witch" you skipped. You're arguing about something that has nothing to do with the film. There's no evidence that she kept her job or was was fired either way. Grady had his writing mojo back so they were going to be fine. Matbe Sarah thought she was too old to get pregnant. Maybe Richard gets fired after "somebody finds out" that he parlayed his silence about a burglary and dog killing into a book deal for himself. He'd make the perfect guest on Oprah, right?

If you want to continue wrestling with issues that perhaps a Wonder Boys 2 might clarify, then knock yourself out.

reply

How is there nothing not naive about your reply, Any college Chancellor knows she can get pregnant if she does not use protection. She has been highly trained and she being very disciplined in anything having to do with this. It is part of her job to counsel students and teachers on such matters. Any college board would not tolerate this behavior. They must uphold her to a high moral ground for the students sake and the reputation of the school. I did not say or imply it was part of the film. I was making a call on something being farfetched and not realistic in how things work in college education.

Yes it is far fetched. And?

reply

This is late and will probably never be read, but you're assuming that she got pregnant because they didn't use protection. I don't remember this ever being mentioned in the movie. Also, she's totally surprised to be pregnant, therefore it wasn't planned. I think she was supposed to be mid-40s. She either used protection and they still got pregnant, or perhaps she thought she was too old to get pregnant. Either way, accidents happen, and people can make mistakes.

reply

You made good points on the pregnancy issue.
