The hollering black guy at the end seemed shoe-horned in

It was supposed to add this slice-of-life charm that this working-class dude doesn't get Grady's life or novel, but his POV seemed really contrived, especially being married to that mousy white actress whose name I don't remember. It breaks up the racial homogeneity of the film but to me just seems annoying.

Not at all, the character of Vernon Hardapple, and his stolen, dark maroon 1966 Ford Galaxy 500 with black interior, are integral to the story and how Grady ends up losing his 2611 page manuscript. His appearance also gives insite into Grady and Crabtree's relationship with how they share a love of making up back stories for people in a room they see.

You must have missed the scene where he is introduced in the bar by non other than Crabtree and Tripp as they play character creation looking at him as an example. His whole presence is no insignificance either. That's like saying the part of the story where James steals the Marilyn Monroe jacket was unnecessary as well. This story is filled with incongruent circumstances and it adds to the characters' abilities to cope with them.
