no southern accents

It's supposed to be a school in South Carolina, but I don't remember hearing any southern accents in this film. I've never been to S. Carolina, and I know certain elite schools get students from all over, but it seems like everyone in this movie sounds from anywhere but the deep south...

I'm from the deep south (southern Louisiana) and do not have an accent. Not the kind I feel you're talking about anyway. It is a common misconception that everyone from the south has a thick 'southern/country' accent. Just saying...

I'm from South Carolina, and I don't have an accent. South Carolina is normally considered the deep south, but still the accents are not necessarily as sharp or obvious as someone from say Mississippi or Alabama. So it could go either way. And actually Michael did have a little bit of a Southern accent which you can hear a little bit of in the scene after he essentially gets suspended from the team and is talking to Hugo about how his family is all about "reputation."

I remember two things very clearly: I am a great sinner and Christ is a great Savior.

i need to ask. isn't this a boarding school, not a day school. so technically, not all students there would come from south carolina? in these expensive schools, many people/students come from long distances to be educated there.

I agree with the posters here who say that not everyone in the South speaks with heavy accents. Hollywood portrays it that way but it is not accurate. People who expect people from the South to talk with heavy accents have usually seen too many Julia Roberts movies and she is a terrible representation of a Southern accent. She does the worst Southern accent I've ever heard. No one talks like that! I'm from SC and attended college in AL so I'm familiar with Southern accents.

Maybe Julia Roberts sounds the way she does because she grew up in Georgia?

And I'm grateful for that...
