usually, you think, My Little Pony, cute little fun stories,
but no.
I think this feature was WAY better than the MLP Movie.
It had things to drag in an audience from all ages.
and genders.
The boys had the evil centaur and the angry dragons to croon over,
while the girls had their little ponies.
the parents wouldn't be so bored watching the movie,
and it was/would have been an excellent introduction to the series.
not to mention,
the characters from this feature were never heard of/seen in later series.
[or at least from the ones i have seen.]
it's really disappointing.
Twilight, Bowtie, Medley, AppleJack, Firefly, Amber, Bubbles, Glory, Moon..something, and the unnamed rainbow pony with the kitty on her back are forever my favorite ponies.

i hope hasbro doesn't try to remake Rainbow Brite.

The unnamed pony did get a cermaic figure with a name... First Born, of all things! I like it. Creepy on so many levels.

I think the main reason this is so much better than the Movie is that it has exactly the same plot depth, in a quater of the screentime. Villian finds way to ruin ponies with magic, tries, fails, tries again after musical interlude, actually succeeds somewhat, is thwarted at last minute after desperate battle battle by uberweapon provided by Moochick. That, and Tirac was actually frightening where the Witches were a one-joke comedy that got more screentime than the damn Ponies did.

I love the Sea Ponies' song. I've shown it to many, and it seems to be universally frightening. :) So inexplicable. So dancy...

This is definitely better...I always thought it was the pilot since it's their first meeting with Megan. My parents must have taped it for me or something because I've got it on a really old tape. But it is one of those tapes that I can go back when I'm feeling really really super-duper nostalgic and enjoy. I guess I was six when it came out but I thought it was earlier. How come this isn't listed among episode lists or on its own in IMDB? I know that Tyrak (am I spelling that right?) is the same voice as the narrator from Transformers The Movie but he's listed for TF but it doesn't have MLP on his list. He freaked me out when I was a kid! My friends and I watched TF:TM (I hadn't seen it when I was little) and when I heard the opening I immediately thought "Now begins the night that never ends!!!!" and when we finished watching TF I popped in my MLP tape and the guys were 1st-impressed that a girls' cartoon could go that dark, 2nd-recognized half the voices in the show (because every '80s cartoon has the same voices--like old friends).
But this is the best episode of MLP and I can't find it anywhere on IMDB (I also vaguely remember an episode when Megan and a blue? pony were on a ledge over lava? and the episode ended with them stuck there "to be continued" and I remember that one being a tense one...haven't seen it since I was six (I know this for sure, because it was right before I got on the Kindergarten bus), but I remember wanting to see that one again.)
This one had the best songs too, by far. The other eps the songs seemed forced and awkward. Seaponies is definitely a classic. Once upon a time I could sing the moochik's song and "Dancing on Air."

I have been feeling rather nostalgic lately and have been trying to dig up "My Little Pony" DVD's where I could find them in the search for this one episode. It's the one episode I remember so well from my childhood, but IMDB has no record of it and neither does Amazon. Does anyone have any idea what season this episode was on or have any information as to where I might find a copy? I would really appreciate it...

I managed to download a copy from somewhere or other (can't remember where now, it's been a while) and it was called Battle for Midnight Castle when I downloaded it, but I don't think I ever saw that written in the show's title sequence.

Still my favourite pony movie; the theater release was a disappointment by comparison... I loved the dark elements in it, which were never really matched by the other MLP material out there...

this episode or mini movie or whatever it is is on the season one dvd. Its a special feature on the last disk. i was excited to see it again after many many years.

I watched this episode so many times as kid, seeing the courageous ponies fight against Tyrak ( who was so scary that face of his was grotesque). Twilight was my favourite she was so fragile yet she was powerfull at the same time. The first Born pony looked so cool she had this very majestic look to her to bad they changed the direction of the series.

Anyway I came across it on DVD recently and purchased it immediately but for some reason( to my surprise my memories were still sharp) they edited out some little things which I noticed was not there like for example when Tyrak bursts out of his castle he whips the dragons and for some reason the sound of the lashes were edited out of the latest incarnation and I was heavily disappointed it wasn’t there but I downloaded the episode of a torrent site and there you go the whipping of the dragon ponies were there. They also edited out the whole moochick song?

Depends on where you shop it around at, and who wants it bad enough. I got a copy of it, too from a video store a few years back for just a dollar when they were liquidating their VHS selection for DVD.

Try E-Bay or Amazon, you might make, at the very least, twenty bucks, maybe more depending on if you stumble upon a hard core MLP fan.

They don't put people like us in hell, we'd only end up running the place.

I completely agree with you. I think the My little Pony and Friends series was good but I was bummed that they didn’t focus more on the original ponies and this pilot episode introduced so many of the ponies that are not featured in the original cartoon like Medley, Applejacks and Cotton Candy to name a few. The cartoon focused on the same recurring characters over and over again like Lickity Split, Sweet Stuff, Whizzer, Heart Throb, Surprise and Gusty. I think they should have included all the ponies instead of only focusing on a few of them....

Same thing with Escape From Catrina. Sparkler and Star Flower only appeared in this movie. They never made any reappearances in any of the cartoon episodes....
