Ya, well people do that with many insperational type of movies. I think people was complaining about "Ants" or "A Bugs Life" because of the fact the ants didn't have enough legs.

people complaining about historical accuracy for this movie is ridiculous. in the first 10 minutes you see people dancing to "we will rock you", if that doesn't hit home the point that this movie isn't about accuracy then you're probably dense. if you can't enjoy a movie that isn't historically accurate then you need to lighten up.

i love this movie, just saw it again on tv. definitely underrated imo.

I thought the deliberate anachronisms were the source of this film's appeal. It's hilarious and charming.

The movie didn't try to put some hogwash historical accuracy, it made a story, and then it added some anarchrisoms hell theres the nike symbol for gods sake.

at least unlike say Robin hood it didn't try to ram a story into a time period and suddenly give the french WW2 era landing craft

Isthisinternet, you took the words right out of my mouth :p

I couldn't agree more! I'm surprised it's rating is so low because it has much to recommend it and I loved all the jousting and every line uttered by Paul Bettany as Geoffrey Chaucer!

Totally agree. Anachronisms obviously done on purpose are good with me. It's when movies like Braveheart start making everyone believe in myths like "prima nocte" that I start to get pissed.

That's all well and good, but then what's the point of having a movie set in an actual, historical time period if you are going to ignore everything about that time period? Why not just have it set in the "Magical Fairy Realm of La-la-land", or some such?

Western Europe in the REAL 14th Century (the time period I assume this movie takes place since it name dropped Chaucer) was an interesting (if somewhat grim) place, especially in the latter half of the century after the Black Plague pretty much broke down most societal structures and chaos reigned. A relative commoner becoming a "noble" Knight in the late 14th century was not unheard of, if you were ruthless and bloodthirsty enough.

They mention Rufus Sewell's character was the leader of a "Free Company". I notice they didn't go into any detail in how the Free Companies operated. It wasn't pretty. But that's how you made it back then.

How about have Heath Ledger's character joining a Free Company in the pay of Charles (The Bad) of Naverre or Henry, The Duke of Lancaster, gaining status and wealth while cutting a swathe across Northern Picardy in the aftermath of the Battle of Poitiers, which pretty much crippled the French Government? It would be a Medieval Picaresque story of a true scoundrel. Make it like a Cormac McCarthy novel or a 14th Century version of A Clockwork Orange.

I think THAT would have made a much more interesting movie, instead of this forgettable piece of fluff.

"what's the point of having a movie set in an actual, historical time period if you are going to ignore everything about that time period?"

The point was obviously to do something different. And Helgeland succeeded. He made an iconoclastic movie about the 14th century and he made it fun and irreverent and enjoyable, unlike most every other grim and boring film about the era.

The movie is all kinds of ridiculous and thats one of it many charms...The Soundtrack shouldn't fit, but it does, the introductions by Bettany are over the top, and the jousting scenes are pretty bad at times(sometimes you can just tell the guy Ledger is pounding is just aiming away on purpose) but it doesn't matter...Its pure entertainment...It fluff, and great fluff at that!

"You are tearing me apart, Lisa!"" The Room..a cinematic masterpiece.
