The blacksmith girl...
Kate should have been the one to end up with William. She is better in every conceivable way than Jocelyn.

shareWhile Kate is my favorite character, I am not a Kate/Will fan. First, the plot of main char going for popular person, then realizing they really love the less popular friend (who was usually crushing on them) is overdone. Second, now I can pretend that after the movie, Kate and Edward had their own romantic adventure and fell in love. :)

No way! Kate is an average person. A hard worker and cute, but average. Jocelyn is intelligent, beautiful, wise, witty and funloving. Jocylyn rules. And if they were to fight for the knight, Jocylyn would whup Kate's butt. Literally, she'd pummel Kate's gut and kick her fat butt.
shareSo you're saying a prissy princess would beat a blacksmith? Um, ok.
shareNot only would the prissy princess beat the blacksmith girl, the prissy princess would destroy and humiliate Kate. In the fantasy world of the movie, the princess is clever, educated, graceful and quick. Note her grace during the dance scene. Also, she always seemed to be holding something back. She always semmed to be playful in her words and movements. The princess was skilled. On the other hand. Kate, while strong, seemed squat. Did you notice how goofy she looked when she lifted her dress and ran along with William during his contests? Not exactly smooth and graceful. Also, she looked like the kind of person who would become fat.
So, if they wee to debate, have a spelling contest, have a dance contest, or play the violin, the prissy proncess would dominate. But, especially in a fight, the proncess would humiliate the pudgy blacksmith. Maybe they'd fight in the arena for the honor of William.
Kate would wear her dark and dull blacksmith dress and a scowl on her face. The prissy princess has on am elegant dress and a playful smile. Her movements are like a dance. Kate charges the princess kicking up dust and lowering her shoulde like a linebacker. The princess steps aside but leaves her foot out. ate trips "UUUUGG!" and her dress rides up as she slides forward in the dirt. The princess hops over grabbing the back of Kate's hair with her left hand and with her right hand the proncess grabs the elastic band in the back of Kate's old fashioned underwear. She lifts Kate up in a standing wedgie. Kate's dress is flopped over her head as the princess drags her around the arena grounds.
"OW! OW! OWEEE!" Kate cries out.
"William, oh William, will it be her, or me?" the prissy princess calls out as she looks up to William. Then, as she runs the whimpering blacksmith around, the proicess says to Kate,"You have been weighed and found wanting.". She gumps Kate head first into a big iron trashcan. Only Kates feet stick out as the pissy princess dances gracefully away.

There is nothing average about Laura Fraser's character in this film. And if she's what you consider "pudgy" with a "fat butt", you may have troubles in your romantic life.
The princess was part diva and made Will do silly things to prove his love. The blacksmith was all woman...and in fact everything you attribute to Jocelyn applies to Kate (even more-so).
I think so too. Kate is smart enough to fashion new and better armor, she's loyal and doesn't ask Will to throw a fight to prove his love. I think Will should have seen that Kate is the better choice. Jocelyn is alright, I have nothing against her but Kate is the solid one.

I always thought Kate would end up with Roland. There seemed to be something there.
shareI can see that. While I still prefer Kate/Edward (yea for fan fics), I think she'd be happier with Roland than Will.
I also like Kate/Adhemar. He has a nice side that only the right woman can bring out. :)

Realistically, regardless of the wit and grace Jocelyn has...
Kate would take her. She's stronger and probably knows how to sword fight.
Don't know about sword fighting. Her weapon of choice seems to be hammers. However, I agree that due to her job she'd be stronger and (out of to necessity) would know how to defend herself.

It would have been a decent story, but I prefer the way they've done it. To be honest, I do see more in Jocelyn than Kate's character.
shareWhy would they end up together when they didn't seem to have any romantic chemistry together?
shareWell, personally, I found Kate to be more physically attractive. She was less of a bitch, as well.
True, they had no chemistry. But they were both appealing together. It wouldn't happen, sure, but it doesn't hurt to imagine.
