What's the point of this movie's existence?

The story had been told and end with T2, there was no natural way to continue the story unless you did a future war movie, maybe they just made it as an easy buck recognition off of the name which is the motivation most of the time with sequels.

This movie is basically Terminator 2 beat for beat in a family friendly manner.

Most like of the Terminator sequels this was something made that is pointless.

It meant the chance to have the Skynet attack, so then allow a fourth to focus just on the war.

That's what Terminator Salvation did, but in order to get to that, they had to make T3 first to set it up. While it didn't have the best justification for existing (Judgement Day is inevitable I guess), especially after all the hard work the characters did in T2 to prevent it, it was a good action movie with a powerful ending, and it set the state for future Terminator movies that take place during the war.

reply

yes. total unnessary film that add zero except shock end.

terminator salvations is better sequel. important for film sequel to tell different story and not knock offs of previous successful film. i hate retreads. lazy, no passions.

reply

No point.
The saga ended at T2.
T1 and T2 are the true Terminators.
No one needs to ever watch any other films. They are just money grabs and don't exist as far as I am concerned.

reply

T2 is one of those movies that spawned a lot of unnecessary sequels like the Jaws sequels.

reply

this film was part of arnie's campaign for california governator

t3 is just t2 but with sad endings to set up more shit terminator sequel

terminator 1 is great film. t2 is great rehash of terminator 1. nothing else is worth watch. on t1 and t2 worth watch.

I wouldn’t say it’s family friendly, I mean hell it’s still rated R, but I think the point of its existence is money.

But let’s be honest, at least it’s not as bad as the 3 that came after it.

reply

I always saw T3 as a "what-if" scenario involving the internet. And while it has cringe like the strip club scene, it also has great action sequences. But I really just wish it was the first two Terminator movies.

reply

Just watch the special extended edition of the second movie. It gives the franchise a definitive conclusion and you can now think of 3-6 as fan fiction.

I have.

"The story had been told and ended with T2".

Speak for yourself. As far as I'm concerned, the story had been told and ended with the 1984 original.

T1 is undoubtedly better than T2. I was surprised that the consensus among fans is that T2 is much better

The trifecta of Biehn, Hamilton and Arnold is what makes the original work so well, as does the pacing thanks to being 23 mins shorter than T2.

reply

Overall, yes, T2 does seem more popular but there's a lot of Terminator fans who prefer the first, and on Rotten Tomatoes, the original has an higher Critics score. That's good going for a fairly low-budget, less mainstream film.

I don't think T2's awful, it's just not for me, and contradicted too much of the original. Some of the attempts at comedy make me cringe, and I can't stand Edward Furlong.

I just prefer the darker/Horror vibe, (almost hopeless) tone to the first - the time loop scenario, prefer the idea of human Vs machine rather than machine Vs machine, and think Schwarzenegger was much more effective as the evil robot.

For me, it holds up as a good stand alone sci-fi thriller.

That's a very good point, especially as the human appears to be such a mismatch when up against a seemingly unstoppable machine. Audiences would've been thinking how Kyle could stop him when he first appears out the time portal as this frightened and kinda frail guy.

I personally prefer the music, cinematography and acting in T1. The love story adds a lot of depth thanks to Biehn & Hamilton's chemistry (I wasn't surprised to read they had feelings for each other in real life). The editing as well, since the film doesn't drag for a second, it's a real roller coaster. I just didn't get that with T2, it's bigger and has more action, but less momentum.

and think Schwarzenegger was much more effective as the evil robot.

Agreed. It's his best role by far, just a huge presence, more effective than the hero t-800 he played in T2.

The obvious way to go would have been to make T3 in the future after Skynet takes over and the battle with the human resistance. Basically expand on what we see at the beginning of T2 and make the whole movie about the war. Instead they chose to lowkey remake T2 with a different enemy terminator and again have Arnold being the hero terminator protecting John Connor. Since Cameron didn't want to do another sequel and chose to focus on different projects they decided to make the sequel without him to cash in on the success of the previous movie. It just doesn't compare to the previous two movies as the Terminator movies were Cameron's vision as well as him working with a specific crew of people to help him realize this vision which were not present in T3. I'm not opposed to having a different director making a sequel but they have to have at the very least an original take and willing to expand on the universe rather than rehash what we already got in the first 2 movies.
