They new there was a diamond hidden in the police station?

At the end when Carlson says "If I was Miles Logan and I had my diamond hidden in a police station, what would I do?" Were they aware that there was a diamond hidden in the police station? I am trying to figure out what happened in the 2 years Logan was in jail. I would think the story about the diamond missing would have been all over the news along with Logan's face. You would think they would have recognized him and busted him from the start.

No... they were not aware throughout the movie... but near the end, when luke wilson sees martin lawrence across the border... he puts two and two together...
