How did the director know this story was out there?

I really like this movie. Have seen it several times and cant really put my finger on why i like it so much. I was wondering if the director knew these guys previously or what the story was to their "meeting"

Interesting. So in the commentary does it say what he was advertising?.....I suppose maybe he was trying to gather some talent for Coven? Thanks.
