I think that would only make sense if someone else other than Mark Borchardt had produced the documentary. Of course, even that could have happened and the royalties etc are being funneled back to the real producers via distribution companies etc. but I agree that, intentional or not, this documentary is about self-delusion, lack of real ambition, the role chemical substances may or may not have in these, and blue-collar, dysfunctional families.
ETA: For some reason I was thinking Mark made this documentary, I have come to learn he didn't. So, yes, I agree with you, this probably a hoax in the sense that it's ostensibly a documentary about a struggling filmmaker when in fact it's not about that at all.
