Needed to be PG-13

Just watched this for the first time and found it amusing and charming, but a bit underwhelming given its reputation.

Reading around, it looks like it was edited down to a PG, which meant there was no explanation for Fred’s bizarre reactions - they cut out all his stoner references 🤦🏻‍♂️

They redubbed Sigourney’s ‘fuck this’ into ‘well screw this’ which looked really obvious. They also deleted a scene which explains why her tits are practically hanging out in the third act. You can see the scene on YT, and her (admittedly wonderbra-boosted) bags get a good showcase.

The film was funny but it needed that extra bit of edge to bring out the cynicism of the actors, a bit more peril, and some spicier jokes.

Blocked.

I don't think I agree. It works for me without the extra edge. But then again, I could watch Alan Rickman read a phone book and be entertained. He was always great.

Not explicitly explaining Fred's blasé attitude, and instead letting the audience figure it out on their own, is a strength of the film, not a weakness. We don't need such hand-holding, and it makes it funnier when you realize what's going on.

They didn’t remove it to avoid ‘hand-holding’, they removed it for a lower rating, and his behaviour is bizarre without the explanation. He just came across as a weirdo until I found out about the censorship.

That was how it actually ran during the theatrical release. My wife and I laughed because it was clear what she said even though those weren't the words that came out. I wonder if it was a blooper that the director left in deliberately?

I think the studio just decided to retool the film as a PG with little time left before the release date.

reply

The movie is perfect as is.

reply

It probably was before they cut it for a PG.
