Fun fact that they left out of this movie

I was having fun reading a list of stuff they left out of movies, stuff that the film-makers left out on purpose because it was a case of, "Reality is unrealistic," or too crazy to believe, despite historical evidence to back up the insane true stories listed.

For this movie, I'm just gonna focus on something they deliberately left out of it, simply because it would blow your minds.

I'm going to first ask all of you, how often have you seen athletes promoting products on tv? A lot, right? You've seen them promote everything from sports products, to food, to clothes, to even Carnival Cruises (Shaq will do anything for money these days, hehe).

Well here's the thing: it's not a new idea. Turns out, that ancient Greeks and ancient Romans did the exact same thing! In the case of ancient Rome, some gladiators became really popular with the masses, and their managers (these were often their owners too if the gladiator was one of their athletic slaves) would sign them on to different vendors (through a contract, of course) to sell items with their faces and names associated with the products to get people to buy more, and the gladiator or his manager would get a cut of the profits. Vendors in ancient Rome would set up shop outside the arenas, selling things like food, figurines, clothing, drinks, all with the face and/or name of the gladiator they were promoting.

So in relation to this movie, they had to cut out a scene where vendors were promoting Maximus on their wares, because the scene would have looked too "modern" to the audience, and when asked, the producer said it was a case of, "They would never believe us" when it came to doing that in ancient Rome.

SHAQ OWNS HIS OWN PRODUCTION COMPANY NOW...HE MAKES THE COMMERICIALS...THAT'S BIG TIME MONEY.

The Romans were not much different to us now. And people always wants to be near their stars, so any memoriblia is and always went well. But yes, it would be silly, but I also don't want/expect to see how they sell merch in Creed 4 before his next last fight.

If you wanta have some more fun, just look up lists of historical events that are almost too crazy to believe ;) It's fascinating stuff. The part that cracks me up is, Hollywood is famous for bending or even breaking the truth, and yet sometimes, when faced with real-life insane stories, they either don't have to exaggerate, or they change it to make it more "believable" for audiences, rather than telling it like it was. Ironic, isn't it?

That's pretty interesting. That definitely would have looked cheesy in the movie. Something else modern I was always curious about back in the day is we are CRAZY about stats with our athletes and competitors. They were pretty advanced with math back in the day and I always wondered if they were keeping and comparing stats on all these guys and the horse racing and chariots and the whole thing. They were betting and giving odds so there must have been some math and stats involved.

I think they did, but it would have had to have been a niche group of people who were literate and knew advanced math. I don't doubt there would have been people who studied the gladiators, learned their strengths and weaknesses, studied how strong and fast they were compared to other gladiators, and factored that all into whatever they used for gambling statistics at the time. Just keep in mind it would have been very crude math, with a lot of guestimating. I mean, all the math-savvy people in that era only had their brains and abacuses to work with.
