Why do Roman Emperors scatter gold and bread to the crowds ?

Are the people of the Capitol really that poor ? Its like lending a penny over to a bum.
And the way they threw the bread and on top of that the crowd cheering for the glorified Emperor Commodus was truly embarrassing. Isn't the Colosseum supposed to be games for the high born, rich noble clans eh. 

Nothing like a nighttime stroll to give you ideas.

The games were to entertain the masses. It's the origin of the expression "bread and circuses": give them gladiator fights and spectacles, and the people won't mind so much that they're poor and living under the control of an insane despot.

Q: Why do Roman Emperors scatter gold and bread to the crowds ?
A: Because they can. It's like Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

Hope you enjoyed this movie. Reading Roman History is fascinating.

It was entertainment for the masses, the Roman equivalent of going to the cinema.

No different than the modern promotional schedule at any MLB stadium. Same idea. Bat day, collectors card day... Hey, who wouldn't want their own Maximus bobblehead doll?

It appears the governor and his harem would have the box seats. But the 50k in attendance were mostly commoners sitting on open-air stone benches.
