Incredibly Overrated

I'm not a hater: I own both versions on bluray and watch them on occasion.

It's not terrible by any stretch, but certainly not up to the hype it had and still has. This happens with films sometimes; could be a combination of marketing and other forces, and then the thing gets a momentum that isn't really fitting given what it actually is.

I just watched it again for the first time since it was in.theatres and I still love it. It's got amazing acting, beautiful cinematography, great tension, music , a satisfying ending etc. I don't know what's not to like.

reply

I find it difficult to rewatch, because of the music. It's just terrible.
And worked better in Pirates of the Carribean...

reply

I've always liked the music in this film and I think it's very effective. I suspect the problem is that for so many films since the specification is 'can we have something similar to Gladiator', which dilutes the impact of the original.

The music is terrible? Oh dear god who dropped you as a kid?

reply

One of the greatest soundtracks of all time.

reply

oh dear this made tear up in laughter :)

also do have the soundtrack to gladiator playing tho

reply

This movie is better in every capacity than any of the Pirates films, by far. And I'm a Pirates fan. They're not in the same league.

I think it's underrated. :/

reply

Yes, being in the IMDB top 250 rated films and winning the Oscar for Best Picture certainly makes it underrated - Just look at how no one appreciates it, ugh!

reply

I think it was an incredible feat of film making, and the acting is top notch. I feel like there really hasn't been an epic since that has been as fully immersive as this film. You could argue for LOTR or GOT, but they're fantasy/historical, as for a pure, historical/action/drama, Gladiator stands tall.
I gave it a 9/10 because I think there's a few scenes in the extended edition that would've fit into the theatrical, but there are some scenes in the extended that I agree should have been cut, and the ending with Maximus' escape seemed a little rushed.
But this film has terrific dialogue, characters, and the arena battles are great because there all a little bit different.
I wish I could go back and re-watch this in the theater.

reply

The dialogue and acting were *beep* terrible. So was the supposed moral lesson. This was just another vapid blockbuster with a lot of eye candy for the halfwits.

Oh,and the best ever soundtrack?? It sounded forced and generic. Every Dead Can Dance album is better than this soundtrack.

I know I'll take a beating for this, but to me Joaquin ruined it. I know it's how the wrote the character, but he just sucked as a bad guy. He wasn't menacing; he was just f()cking annoying.

I completely agree. He was too villainous to be a good villain. He was cowardly, incestuous, power-hungry, deceitful, and on and on. There was no interesting or even sympathetic aspect about him. Darth Vader was interesting because he used to be (well, according to the OT) Obiwan's friend, just like Masala was to Ben Hur. There is just nothing interesting about him whatsoever.

Feel better now? Poor little cretin.

Whilst the terms 'forced' and 'eye candy' are cretinous statements made by those without enough vocabulary to critique a film properly, he is allowed to dislike this movie. Disliking it doesn't make him a cretin. Many critics at the time of release were not as impressed as the majority of voters on here and I agree with the critics consensus. An above average sword and sandles blockbuster. Spartacus is a far superior movie.

As if this is the place to write a "proper" film critique... Ride your high horse off a cliff.

I take it you're one of the halfwits I mentioned before.
