Gladiator vs Braveheart

I just watched Gladiator for the 100th time, and that movie is one of the best I've ever seen. Now Braveheart on the other hands some would say has better action scenes. I think they rub neck to neck in action scenes go. As far as the story and cinematography goes Gladiator wins hands down. I know Mel Gibson is an ok director but he can't hold a candle to Ridley. I'm not really all that supportive of actors directing themselves either. Which is the better movie to you and why?

I love both, and at this point have pretty much given up on trying to pick between the two. I do consider each to be one of my favorite movies. (Granted I probably have too many movies that I would call "one of my favorites" but I digress) My usual answer to this question, as it has naturally come up before, is that you can't go wrong with either option.

I actually watched both these movies back-to-back the other day and I'd have to say that Gladiator wins hands-down in pretty much every category EXCEPT for the villain character-- I'm very fond of Patrick McGoohan's performance as Lingshanks although I like Joaquin Phoenix as well.

Braveheart is far more historically inaccurate, I find the dialogue stilted and the acting not on the same level. The other thing that irked me when I watched Braveheart this time is Mel Gibson's overuse of dramatic slow-motion scenes. I enjoy both musical scores equally, however.

Gladiator is not my cup of tea, but it's definitely better than Braveheart IMO. Not a fan of Mel Gibson movies.
