Loyalty of the army???

One thing I never understood, literally 5 minutes (screen time) before they arrested Maximus, Marcus Aurelius told Maximus that he would be able to take the role of regent because he had the loyalty of the army behind him. Why then, are they so quick to turn on him only 5 minutes later and arrest him? Did they really have absolutely no loyalty to their general whatsoever?

The only one who really betrayed him in that scene was Quintus. The soldiers who grab and take Maximus out to be executed were Commodus' Praetorians, not the men that had served with/under him.

Yes though his aid could have tried to summon his army to get him back from the praetorians, which he didn't...
