Am I the only one who didn't laugh ?

Am I the only one who didn't laugh when Commodus was going goofy crazy during the game ? To me, It was sad to watch as it just shows how instable and delusional the character is.

You weren't supposed to laugh.
The scene shows his blood lust.

"a malcontent who knows how to spell"

reply

Yeah. You weren't supposed to laugh.

reply

Another vote for "not supposed to laugh". He was unconsciously showing just how vile he is.

God, y'all are so serious!

I actually think it was an out-take of Phoenix goofing around, not in character, and they thought it was too good to omit from the final cut. You can read whatever you want about Comodus into it - taking a childlike enjoyment in violence, going nuts, making fun of the gladiators - doesn't matter. It's a terrific bit - and yes, hysterical!

reply

I dunno, some of the reactions might have been "goofing around". But God, the way he stuck his tongue out and grimaced when some guy got his throat slashed. I maintain that that was one of the moments that best conveyed the character.

Sad story. You got a smoke?

reply

We're not talking about the same reaction shot. The one you reference was obviously meant to show C's blood lust.

reply

Yeah the one seen where Commodus bobbles his head and goes 'Woo hoo hoo' made me crack a smile to be honest.

Hey! You're not old enough to drink! Now go and die for your country!!!

reply

Which scene was that?

DISPLAY thy breasts, my Julia!

reply

I didnt laugh. But I did laugh when he begged for a sword and '' sheath your swords ! '' came bellowing out.

reply

While Joaquin's facial reactions look a little hammy and thus that may spur a laughing response, in the end it illuminates his character's vileness in being blase towards the murderous spree abounding in the gladiator duels.

When God made Tom Cruise, he was only joking.
