Still great, but not nearly as much now

I still love this 2000 film, visually it's stunning still.

But given that the more graphic shows such as Starz Spartacus and HBO's Game of Thrones (both of which also have strong storylines) have really excelled the boundaries, this film's set-piece battle scenes look boring now.

I enjoyed Spartacus but found the action exaggerated. Almost like a stones throw from Kill Bill. And personally I got bored of GoT's after three seasons.

I don't understand Game of Thrones's appeal, it is basically just English history mixed with violence and nudity isn't it?

reply

No, Halo, no.

reply

English history is devoid of violence and nudity?

reply

I don't think graphic violence equals quality work. In fact, I think gratuitous violence takes a lot of enjoyment out of a film.

reply

I still think it's too tame now...

Read the books. So much is omitted in the series.

reply

Yes, really. Your opinion.

I didn't say that the artistic merits of this movie fail, I said that the violence depicted in those TV shows (great as they are) pales Gladiator.

I enjoy them both as they're both fun shows, but they have no where near the same impact as the story of Maximus, betrayed General turned Gladiator.

In your minority opinion. Game of Thrones does not use nearly as much shock value as people seem to assume. The nudity has also toned down a lot over the years. The storylines in Game of Thrones are far more detailed and complex than anything in this movie, even if it is one of my favorite films.
