The opening battle in Germania
Does anyone what was the actual language used by the Germanic chieftain right before the battle started? Or maybe it was a fictional language based on a collection of real ones?

shareIn the movie he says Ihr seid verfluchte Hunde which is modern day German for 'you are cursed dogs'. As to the language he would have been speaking at the time I'll leave between you and Google
Hey! You're not old enough to drink! Now go and die for your country!!!
Thanks for that answer. Of course the German language as we know it today didn't exist in the 2nd century AD. I know the battle was supposed to take place during the Marcomannic Wars.
shareThe directors/producers should have considered using ancient Saxon language for the Germanic tribe, as it is well known today with many manuscripts in museums & libraries in western Europe & UK. Using modern German was to a small extent, a lazy choice.
For example, in The Eagle, the Pictish people spoke in Scottish Gaelic, although the Pictish tribes had their own language, now lost.
He may have said "Ihr seid verfluchte Hunde" but it sounded like a Glaswegian accent to me
This means something, this is important.
