Just re watched this
I had only seen Gladiator once and that was over a decade ago. I remembered not being too overly impressed with the film. I kept thinking "If this guy is this big beloved famous Roman General, then why doesn't anyone recognize him or set him free". I don't know why I let that little thought poison me from not enjoying the movie.
I did the directors cut last night, and my opinion was totally changed. Such a wonderful epic film. What makes the movie for me is Phoenix's performance. He plays the villainous Caeser so damn well. Not only do we the audience dislike him, but more importantly we UNDERSTAND him. This is crucial to the films success.
Only complaint this time around was that the score is not very good at all. Not until the closing track of the film is there any really moving or inspired accompaniment
