how did the black guy know his name???

In the battle of Carthage reenactment , this is before maximus takes off his mask and reveals his name to everyone...he gets on a horse and is racing around the collaseum and the black dude his buddy yells "maximus" and throws him the sword as maximus races past on the horse and catches it. So....did maximus tell thr other men his name before he told commidus?? It didn't seem like, esp since the buff guy asks him about his battles in germania

He probably already told them his name was Maximus, but not was his previous occupation was. Remember, when confronted by Commodus, he says not just his name but his rank and how he served. Likely this is the first time his fellow gladiators hear that he was once a general.
