You probably watched it by now, Hownos. So tell us what you think about it if you had . But I answer it anyway.

It's worth a watch. It's not perfect, probably a little overlong and I don't find the stuff in the film outside of the Mental Institution as interesting. The stuff within the Institution is where the film really shines, funnily enough Winona Ryder is least interesting person in the film. Mind you, she's stunning in it though. Ryder with short hair is the best Ryder.

Angelina Jolie pretty much is main reason to watch it, and shows sadly what a waste that we just don't see enough of her as great actress enough. She has sprinkles of it throughout her career after this, Mighty Heart and Changeling. But too many underperforming roles and pay cheque jobs overshadow performances like the one she gives in this film. Well deserved Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her.

The Late Brittany Murphy shows off some of what she could have been in a small but impactful role. Also great to see the underrated Elisabeth Moss (only 18 here) in good role. Also Clea Duvall had a bit of run from late 90's and early 00's where she looked like was she going to break out as a leading lady, but slipped into supporting roles in film and TV and then directing/writer gig. She's very good in this. Also Whoopi Goldber has a nice turn as nurse of the ward. Jared Leto is wasted in a nothing role really as Ryder love interest.

James Mangold has done better films before and since (Copland, Walk the Line, Logan, 3:10 to Yuma and Ford vs Ferrari) but he does a good job ticking the story along. I know this was dream project for Ryder (surprised she didn't go for Jolie role) and she really is unselfish actress as she takes a backseat to the other cast members for large chunks of the film.

If going by IMDB score, I'd give it a 6.9 score. It so wanted to be a female version of One Who Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest but it's nowhere near as powerful.
