Isn't Irony a wonderful thing.

Firstly I have to say that I thought this was a great movie, with some brilliant performances, I also am of the belief that Angelina Getting Best Supporting Actress was not a mistake on The Academys part.

But despite the subject matter, there were some very funny scenes and brilliant lines, none more so that the most unintentional funny line that at the time of release was not even slightly funny. I am of course referring to Winona's opening monologue, almost the first line of the film:

"Have you ever stolen something when you had the money to pay for it"

not funny in 1999 when the film was released but after 2001 and Winona's shoplifting arrest, all of a sudden! I didn't see this film until after the 2001 incident, I literally had to pause the DVD, Laugh? I nearly passed away!

I think that every time I watch the movie.

I used to steal a lot when I was a kid up through my teens. I didn't necessarily have money, but it was never about stealing something because I wanted it. Most of what I took was stuff I didn't even care about or want. It was just the thrill of it. But I got caught trying to steal a lamp at a flea market when I was maybe 15, and thankfully the owner of the booth showed mercy and didn't press charges. I was banned from the flea market for life, and I never stole another thing again. Being surrounded by people staring at me after I was caught was embarrassing as heck. Standing there not knowing what was going to happen scared me to death. After that, I never even felt the urge. Getting caught ended up being a good thing even though it didn't feel like it at the time.

Since Winona could afford anything in that clothing store, I'm sure her reason for stealing was similar to mine. I'm glad she got caught, and I hope all shoplifters get caught, because that might be the only way they will stop. But unfortunately for her, getting caught meant being all over the headlines. I just hope it kept her from doing it again. Some people don't stop after being caught. I hope she did. And I'm glad that she is still able to get roles in movies. Everyone makes mistakes, sometimes I think we expect famous people to be perfect.

I am pretty sure that's more of a funny coincidence than an irony, but hey I am not literary professor.

Yes I laughed too at the line.

I know the shoplifting incident was a long, long time ago but for some *beep* up reason I still remember it quite well, even though it's a nothing story. I think it was big celeb news at the time. Just my thoughts....
