Actually Suzanna's was what they called a wrist banger. Meaning instead of cutting he wrist, she would bruise it.

Susanna Kaysen had an episode in the Hospital in which she thought the bones in her hand had disappeared.

At the beginning of the movie and this is kind of juxtaposed with the end, where she appears to break it during the disagreement with Lisa and co. May be symbolic that she was returning to reality.🐭
