One Of If Not The Best War Movies

I know people will bitch at me, but I can't help it, this is my fave war movie, everything about it was great. The acting, the screenplay, everything.

I totally agree, everything about this movie was just so right(realistic as hell). The story was great and the cast was excellent. Of the war movies I rank it second only to Apocalypse Now, but just barely.

reply

Great acting...That is all i can say,

or maybe we only watched all these gifted actors in ONLY this movie...Dunno

reply

You guys must be out of your minds!!!!!!!!! Did you forget:

Apocalypse Now
Platoon
Born on the 4th of July
Deer Hunter

And this film is better then Full Metal Jacket?!?! NO (sorry i just happen to be a frick of Kubrick films) The training scenes are WAYYY better then in this one, and I somehow found Tigerland to be pointless at times without a meaning to the story. I agree it was an above averege film but nothing more than that! The acting was good, the script ok although boring and pointless at time, the camerawork wasnt near as good as Kubrick's, and dont tell me that you found the sergants in this movie funnier then R Lee Ermey!!!

And the best war movie? What about NON vietnam movies:
Saving Private Ryan
Band of Brothers
A Bridge To Far
Bridge on the River Kwai
Patton

The list goes on and on!

Please reply.....

reply

The Bridge on the River Kwai is my personal favorite war movie of all time.

But...Tigerland does veer into some interesting new territory...

reply

All Quiet on the Western Front was good too. Have to agree with Bridge on the River Kwai being like the best war movie.

But the Deer Hunter wasn't really a war movie. Remember that 15 minute wedding scene. that was probably longer than all the war scenes put together and the movie was 3 hours. It's more on the effects of the war on a group of friends. it was a great movie tho.

Platoon
Born on the 4th of July
Deer Hunter

Tigerland
beat them all, for me. I haven't seen Apocalypse Now yet though, so I guess I can't comment on that until I have...

ok, admittedly, i did not read all the posts here, but i must agree with
"chef aid80"..i felt it was boring in places and that the storyline was totally pointless. the movie just didn't GO anywhere, although yes, the acting was superb. i kept waiting to see how the different stories culminated at the end.....but they never did.
i guess the overall message of the movie was:
"straight government thinking: *beep* up long enough and you can become a leader"
in my humble opinion,
WH0

reply

They never get to Vietnam!!

It's a "war training" movie maybe. But even as that it was pretty lame. The acting was good, but the plot went nowhere.

reply

I think it all depends on what your opinion of a good war movie is. From what I've gathered Saving Private Ryan and Platoon were the best depictions of what it was like to actually fight in each war respectively. In my opinion the best war movie would have to be Apocalypse Now [preferably redux] or Saving Private Ryan.

reply

top war movies
APOCALYPSE NOW
PLATOON
THE DEER HUNTER
FULL METAL JACKET
TIGERLAND

in my opinion vietnam war movies are the only way to go they dont just retell battles they make comments on how stupid and pointless nam was and thats why there so brilliant. im not a fan of saving private ryan its just a run of the mill ww2 flick it bored me and hanks is sickening.

not a quote but my thoughts on apocalypse now: WHOS CRAZIER KURTZ OR THE USA

reply

I thought it was really good. I haven't seen most of the ones mentioned, so I can't comment too much on whether or not this is one of "the best" but I thought it was very good: plot, story and acting. Another war movie that is one of my favorites of all time is "Glory". I don't know who else likes that movie, but I am blown away every time I see it. "Saving Private Ryan" was good too, I like that they didn't try to desensitize it and make it clean-cut. People who weren't there and who don't know anything need to at least get some idea of what happens when people fight for their life, their beliefs, and their country in the violence that is so common place but often sugar-coated.

reply

"the camerawork wasnt near as good as Kubrick's"

Schumacher explains about the camerawork, its supposed to be all shakey so it makes it look like a documentry. I thought the same at first, i was like "God have these people never heard of a tripod!!!" But yeah he explains why its shakey.

Also I don't know if you can actualy call Tigerland a war movie. For one theres no battles or anything and two they never leave the training ground and when they do the movie ends.

I think the storyline was brilliant and the acting even more so!

reply

Man, I have to agree. Most people I know thought this flick was just alright, but I really enjoyed it. Farrell's best performance and a truly excellent war movie, imho.

Screw Schindler's List, Full Metal Jacket, The Best Years of Our Lives. Those are great war films.

watching this movie i got chills through the whole film. in so many ways this was like the school of infantry for the USMC. the fighting, the liberty, and just the plain misery of being in the field. while films like SPR or BoB show the tremendous cammaradery (spelling?) of the grunts that is very accurate, they don't really show the ugly side of the infantrymans life. very, very often the people that you train with and depend on for your life not only are'nt your friends, you can down right hate each other. one more thing, all that patriotism, oorah or hooah stuff is mostly crap in the majority of war movies. i don't know to many grunts that actually like being in the infantry. it is a rough way of life, very demanding. "you don't have to like it, you just have to do it" is one of our mottos.

Appocalypse Now
The Thin Red Line
The Deer Hunter
Full Metal Jacket
Platoon

NB
Would've loved to have seen what Sergio Leone COULD HAVE done with the genre....had he more time....

reply

Its not a war movie! they never get to go to war, its a militry training movie

reply

I actually like the Training movies much more than the war movies. You actually get to learn about the characters and get a little of an idea about what people have to learn before they go to war. For me once they go into war and all the guns start going off it's good for a bit but then it gets kind of boring. It's like all I can see are loads of bushes and someones hat which could be Jones, Texas or Bob. It gets repetative. These films give you much more to engage with. Another training film which I love is G.I Jane, very real and just fantastic performances from Demi Moore and Viggo Mortensen.

If you love something, set it free, if it comes back, set it on fire!!!!!

reply

its a metaphorical wank without the sex piss explosion

reply

Apocalypse Now
Saving Private Ryan
Thin Red Line
Platoon
Deer Hunter
Saints and Soldiers

reply

As good as - if not better than - Full Metal Jacket.

^ You're a jack-ass....all your films should be taken off you and given to homeless people who can distinguish the better film.

... I suppose that's WITHOUT a television set in many cases... ?!

... Just as I thought...

You gave me a glimpse of real life, then told me to carry on with falsity

reply

they look at the pretty pictures on the back

reply

This was an awesome movie
But like MrBruce Lee says it may be not considered a war movie
but everyone has an opinion
you should respect

but it was awesome the acting, the story all of it!

reply

Hey people, you're all forgetting one of the best "war films"...although not strictly a war film it is really :) - The Killing Fields

reply

How can anyone even consider that Saving Private Ryan is a good war film, its so typically hollywood re writing history. The opening scene is, granted, terrifyingly realistic, but no mention that the american landing had it so bad because the american bombers screwed up their targets and started to carpet bomb the normandy coastline from about 2 miles out to sea. The other 4 landing sites went pretty much without a hitch.

My main gripe with the film is that throughout the entire film as the hapless band wanders aimlessly around northern france they encounter ONLY american and german soldiers. Where were the English and Canadian soldiers and French Resistance? (The English alone outnumbered the yanks 2 to 1) Are we expected to believe that america won the war all by themselves?

If you want a realistic portrayal of americans in combat, look no further than the classic Team America : World Police.

Anyway, back on topic. Best War Films....

The Dam-busters
Bridge on the River Kwai
The Great Escape
633 Squadron
The Battle of Britain

quick gag.....

Whats the difference between a British soldier and an Iraqi soldier? ....... You don't know? Welcome to the US Air Force!

Oh yeah...

Hope and Glory is also a cracking film. That really shows how WWII really effected the everyday populace of Europe, in particular, Britain. The entire country was at war, not just the armed forces.
