Red things at the tip of the rifles??
What are those red things at the end of the tip of the M16 rifles? And did this movie come out in theaters ever?

The BFAs are color coded because they are designed to be used with different barrel lengths. The red is for 20" barrels, M16. The yellow is for 16" barrels, M4. Since the M16 came out first, the purpose of the red color was probably just being able to tell easily if the rifle is capable of live fire or not. When they starting making 16" versions they must have decided on making a different color, but one that was still highly visible.

You're right - they're NOT designed to prevent a real bullet from leaving the barrel if a real one was fired accidentally.
One of my instructors was accidentally killed during an antiterrorism exercise because one of the "good guys" didn't notice he loaded a magazine with real bullets into his M16 instead of blanks, and he shot my instructor who was playing a "bad guy" terrorist.
This tragic accident led to many changes in how the M16 is configured to shoot blanks and the BFA was discontinued (for our Department, anyway) because it wasn't needed with the re-design.

The attachment screws a post down the barrel, this forces more gas into the rifle so the bolt will cycle the next round into the chamber, otherwise the weapon would jam because the blank is much less powerfull
shareThat was the problem with Southern Comfort (1981)... when the soldiers in that film did not use the blank adapters... and mixed live rounds with blanks.
